The story behind Ubumwe

Liza is a washing station on the shores of Lake Kivu, in Rwanda's western province, working with 1,850 local farmers. It is owned by Jean Paul, who has 20 years of experience in coffee, and run by his wife, Pacifique Uwicyeza, formerly with the Ministry of Agriculture. The station trains farmers, employs young people and challenges traditional gender roles in farming.

Cherries are selected and washed, fermented for two days in sacks, and dried on raised beds for 48 to 54 days. The result is a coffee of Red Bourbon and RAB C15 varieties, grown between 1,650 and 2,000 metres, with a sweet, spiced profile and the freshness typical of washed coffees from Kivu.
